In a backward move @govmurphy banned districts from offering virtual school next school year. In my latest @ednextjournal article I argue that moves by places like Montgomery County Public Schools & others to thoughtfully launch virtual schools (better than & different from emergency remote learning) in the fall for certain populations that benefit from it, makes a lot of sense. I'd personally love to see a move toward individual growth-based models that allow for outcomes-based funding - so districts don't spend 💵 💵 💵 on things that don't work. An idea I've pushed for a long time. ❓Could we finally get traction❓...... This and more was discussed in our latest @classdisrupted episode. Over the last several years we’ve seen the rise of new kinds of philanthropies that are altering the traditional categories of giving & impact investing. They're giving to nonprofits yes, but also investing in for-profits. Tom Dawson, Strada Education Network, spoke to me on this topic. Efosa Ojomo, coauthor of the Prosperity Paradox and the director of the Global Prosperity research group at the Clayton Christensen Institute, talks about what infrastructure is and why it matters. A term that's become a political football as of late, Ojomo's writings on the topic--and where infrastructure investment will and won't spark growth--are incredibly important right now as we think about investments not just in education, but also across our society. School finance is a sexy topic says Marguerite Roza in our latest @classdisrupted podcast. With the unprecedented amount of federal dollars flowing into schools Marguerite put the amounts in perspective for us on the show. The short of it? It's a lot of money and is quite meaningful. So how should schools/districts spend it? And what should they not do? She offered a ton of insights & creative ideas. My favorite? Let individual schools make decision about how to use the $ at the school level, not the district level, so it can match what they need the most. And what not to do? Don't invest in items that need to recur & will create an expense that needs to be maintained after funding is gone. Best practices = what works on average, which means we aren't applying the right practice in the right circumstance based on what will work for whom and when. So what's a better phrase? "Effective practices" - meaning using the right practice in the right circumstance to get the outcome you desire, says Elizabeth Chu @columbialawschool I like the ring of it. Not only that, but her Center is pushing for mastery-based learning... Making sure students' learning opps aren't bounded by the 4 walls of the classroom and more. Is it controversial? I'd just call it a lot of common sense. Learn more about their project Rise to Thrive & how they are building opportunity for all as we rebuild schools. Even though it may seem like a straightforward question, once you scratch the surface, it’s anything but. As we seek to build schools back better—& not just return to how schools operated prior to pandemic—it's a vital question Individual schooling communities must be clear about purpose and priorities. It's critical to start with the end-and backward map. I don't expect that there will be a clear answer nationally, but in this piece for @forbes I offer some ideas & some history. More prescriptive than I usually am, in my mind we're trying to produce students who are prepared to maximize their human potential, build their passions and lead choice-filled lives, participate civically in a vibrant democracy, contribute meaningfully to the world... ... And the economy, and understand that people can see things differently—and that those differences merit respect rather than persecution. From there, I offer 5 domains for schools to consider as they build specifics around their central purpose and priorities.
